Little Boy Blue | Andrew ThrelfallLittle Boy Blue is a wonderful little cabaret show written and performed by Andrew Threlfall (Lead singer and emcee) and Nigel Ubrihien (Piano player and singer). Set in the tiny but intimate Butterfly Club, the performers draw their cabaret ideas from their title, with many of the songs being variations on the idea of Little Boy Blue. Queue the bluesy songs, and songs about ‘blue’ themes, all of which have a lot of humour and occasionally genuine pathos. One particular highlight was Ubrihien’s original song the Cha Cha of Evil, is deliciously camp and silly at the same time.

Threlfall and Ubrihien have a wonderful easy-going rapport that makes the show fly by; creating an atmosphere that genuinely invites the audience to become involved with the show. The Butterfly Club can be an unforgiving space for both performer and audience, particularly if a performance isn’t going well, but Threlfall and Ubrihien avoid this trap with their polish, banter and general camaraderie.

Though Little Boy Blue is only in town for a short season, both performers are frequent visitors to Melbourne’s cabaret scene and are a well worth seeking out when they next make their trip south from Sydney. All in all, Little Boy Blue is a pleasant diversion that makes for an enjoyable night out.
